Prof. Dr. Günter Krings studied law and history at the University of Cologne and at Temple University in Philadelphia. Alongside completing his doctorate at the Institute of Constitutional Law at the University of Cologne, Krings worked as a lawyer in Mönchengladbach. Since 2004 he has been a lecturer, and since 2010 an honorary professor at the University of Cologne.
He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2002 and has served in various committees and functions, including as a member of the Federalism Commissions I and II, legal counsel of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and legal policy spokesperson of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
Since 2009, Krings has chaired the Federal Working Group of Christian Democratic Lawyers (BACDJ). He is also chair of the German Society for Legislation (DGG) and editor of the journal Zeitschrift für Rechtspolitik (ZRP).
Since 2017, Günter Krings has been chair of the CDU regional group of North Rhine-Westphalia and, since May 2025, deputy chair of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
