Since December 2021, Sven Giegold has been State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. From 2009 to 2021, he was a member of the European Parliament for Bündnis90/Die Grünen NRW. Most recently, Sven Giegold was spokesman for the German Greens in the European Parliament, the Green Group’s representative on the Committee on Economic and Financial Policy, and a substitute member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. In his youth, he was politicized by environmental protection and later founded Attac in Germany with many others. To this day, he says, he is committed to regulating the financial markets in the interest of the real economy and citizens. In parliament, he fights passionately against tax dumping and for the ecological transformation of the European economy. He was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1969. After graduating from high school in Hanover, he studied economics, adult education and politics in Lüneburg, Bremen and Birmingham. He then completed a Master’s degree in Economic Policy and Economic Development at the University of Birmingham, graduating with honors. He later continued his studies at the University of Bremen and spent a year as a visiting scholar at the Department of Economics of the University of Paris XIII in 2004/2005.
